name Phoenicians (Phoinix) originally appears in Greek Literature with
Homer. Most scholars saw the term as a Greek appellation, and tried to
find an explanation for it in the Greek language. Many scholars derive
the name "Phoinix" from the Greek word "Phoinos" meaning - "blood
red" Why were they called so? The explanations are various.
The Phoenician sailors that arrived to Greece after a long journey in
the sea were spoken of as "red men".
>Theres various reasons that scholars believed that they were
called red men. One explanation is because they had red hair, another
explanation is to do with the red sandstone in that area of the world
in ancient Phoenicia and this is where they got their name from. An
other explanation is because of their sun-burnt skin which made them
look very red. The Phoenicians were well known for making purple dyes.
>From my research into the topic of concluded that they were
called "red men" because they were literally red skinned. Not from sun
burn but because they are an old long ethnic group which has been swept
under the carpet. When we look at the ancient Egyptians we find lots of
evidence of a red skinned race and this race from Egypt that left later
became the people we know today as the Phoenicians. The standard
explanation fro why there were red skinned people in ancient Egypt is
because they used to cover up their whole bodies from head to toe with
a mineral called red ochre and this is why the red race has not yet
been discovered because this is simply not true. Some ancient African
tribes put red orchre on themselves to make themselves look more red
skinned but that doesnt mean to say that a red race did not exist.
